The respective parliaments of Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Tanzania and Uganda, have together set up a single online platform, Africa4All, to better communicate with their citizens.
The new tool, run by a project coordinator, Gov2U, will enable the partner parliaments to improve the quality of the services they provide to citizens, increase awareness of parliamentary activities and facilitate the work of the MPs, say its promoters. The every day work of the parliaments, or the other parliaments accessed through the platform, will mean knowledge exchange and sharing of best practices for the benefit of citizens.
According to the platform’s creators, citizens will be able to participate more actively in the legislative process, since they will be able to give their input into parliamentary business. Other potential users are NGOs, international organisations, business and other parliaments. The promoters say it will, “accelerate the transition to a knowledge society” in participating countries.
The Africa4all project is co-funded under the 9th European Development Fund (EDF) by the ACP Group and EuropeAid. Wider Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) adoption is expected to result in the pilot countries and, at the same time, it will “… contribute to the bridging of the digital divide, enhancing the use of new technologies as key enablers for poverty reduction”, reads the promoters’ statement.
