ACP Courier Photo Competition: Rules

The 2010 edition of the ACP Courier 'Award for the Best Photo by an ACP Photographer' opened on 1 May, 2010. The deadline for submissions is 15 September, 2010 at 18:00 Brussels time.

By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to these rules and guarantees that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the rules. Help in applying to the competition is available.

Who May Apply

This award is open to photographers and photojournalists up to 29 years, who are nationals of one of the countries from the ACP (African-Caribbean-Pacific) Group of States.

Eligibility of photos

Each entry consists of a Photo Gallery attached to a site member’s profile, containing up to 5 photos. Each photo must follow the following Technical Specifications:

  • No greater than 5MB in size
  • Quality of expected pictures: 300 dpi and 30 cm for the longest side.
  • Only Jpg and Jpeg extension are acceptable.
  • The content of the image must not be altered. Only basic retouching is permitted. Colours must be kept as close as possible to the light condition at the moment of the shoot. The jury may request the original, unretouched file as recorded by the camera or a scan of the negative or slide.
  • Only single-frame images will be accepted. Composite and multiple exposure images will not be accepted. Images with added borders, backgrounds or other effects will not be accepted. Images must not show the name of a photographer, agency, or publication.
  • The photos must all have been taken in an ACP country since 1 May, 2007
  • Only pictures which have not yet been published may be submitted.
  • Photos must reflect one of the Themes of the Award: trade, culture, tradition, climate change and science and technology, as they relate to African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and development.

Award prize

The author of the best picture will win a monetary price of €1000.

The prize will be paid into his account by GOPA-Cartermill.

An article will be written on the winner in Issue 20 of The Courier and on the website, giving additional visibility to the winning photographers.

Deadline

All photo galleries uploaded as of 18:00h (Brussels time) on the 15 September 2010 will be considered as entries to the competition.

Selection and evaluation criteria

Following the closure of entries to the competition, the selection process will begin. It will consist of three rounds of evaluation:

In Round one (Rating Photos), all eligible photographs will be published online. All site visitors will be able to rate them by giving each up to 5 ‘stars’.

These ratings will be used in Round two (Shortlisting), when the technical committee will use them to help select 60 entries from among all eligible entries based on the following criteria:

  • Pertinence and authenticity (prerequisite);
  • Technical quality (33%);
  • Story-telling, photojournalism skills (33%);
  • Originality and artistic value (33%);

The entries selected in round two will proceed to Round three (Winners Selection), when the jury will collectively select winners based on the judging criteria.

Decisions of the judges are final and binding.

By submitting their entry, candidates accept the finality of the jury's decision.

Results of the competition will be notified by email to all participants.

Candidates who are ineligible or have sent ineligible pictures will be advised earlier.

Copyright requirements and licenses

Photos that represent material or elements that are subject to the rights of third parties must be submitted with the consents necessary to permit the use and the exhibition of the photo.

Upon The Courier’s request, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed release from all persons who appear in the photograph submitted, and/or from the owner of any material that appears in the photograph entry.

Upon The Courier's request, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed written license from the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork, or other copyrighted material that appears in the photograph.

If any person appearing in any photo is under the age of majority in their state/province/territory of residence the signature of a parent or legal guardian is required.

Failure to provide such licenses upon request may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.

Pictures that include art works will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement. If a photo contains the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close-up of another person's art.

The picture, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the award entrant. By entering the award, candidates acknowledge that the submitted photograph is an original work, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest.

By submitting an application to the Award, each candidate authorizes The Courier to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works (along with a name credit) of the entry in connection with the award promotion, on any media and during any public events, without additional compensation.

By submitting an application to the Award, each candidate authorizes The Courier to use the photos for a public exhibition during the 2010 European Development Days in Brussels, along with name, credits, and biography of the author.

By submitting an application to the Award, each candidate authorizes The Courier to produce thumbnails not over 40k to be used for the promotion of the prize, along with name, credits, and bio of the author.

The Courier may use the submitted photos only in connection with the award and promotion/information of the award and will not use them for any other commercial or non commercial purpose.

The candidate has the option of authorising The Courier to re-use the pictures for further editions of  the magazine for non-lucrative purpose along with all the credits of the photos and authors.

Conditions

The Courier reserves the right to ask for references, CVs, short bios, and IDs from the candidates.

The Courier reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and the identification of any entrant and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these official rules

Limitation of liability - disclaimer

By entering this award, all entrants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless The Courier and its partners from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this award or any award-related activities.

The Courier assumes no responsibility for any error, defect, or delay in transmission, or communication line failure.

The Courier is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, servers or providers, or failure of any email entry related to this award.

Right to cancel or suspend the award

If for any reason the award is unable to run as planned, The Courier reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify or to suspend the award. If The Courier cancels or terminates the award, it will not retain any rights to the submitted photographs.

Data privacy

Applicants agree that personal data, especially name and address, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes of and within the context of the award. The data may also be used by The Courier in order to verify the participant's identity, postal address, and telephone number or to verify the participant's eligibility to participate in the award. Participants have the right to access, review, rectify, or cancel any personal data held by The Courier.
