CONGO DRC

After a decade of wars, hope of stability has re-emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after the staging of democratic elections for the first time in over 40 years.

A woman holding her voting card waits in line at the voting station at St Anne Cathedral in Kinshasa, DRC, 30 July 2006.

Our report focuses on the challenges of reconstruction, which will need ongoing international support if they are to be met. This will have a continent-wide and global impact. The European Union has given its firm support to this process of bringing about stability.

As for the Congolese themselves, this report looks at the various visions put forward by the main political groups on the development strategy that needs to be implemented to fulfil such new challenges. It also profiles the new team in charge of the country’s reconstruction.

Finally, the scale of the tragedy experienced by the country has been so great that it has overshadowed other aspects of life in the Congo: the beauty of the country, the ingenuity of its people, the richness and dynamism of its culture. These are all explored in this report.
